Freedom of Belief: Mission Impossible?

In my radio interviews on immigration, people mostly agree that freedom of belief is an important asset that a state has to protect. At the same time, many doubt that it is possible to achieve when beliefs are too different or contradictory.

This always leaves me scratching my head. What is the point of installing “freedom of belief“ as an asset if ultimatively everybody has to believe the same? What is a belief anyway?

In it’s widest sense, a belief is a statement about reality that a person has decided to see as truth for himself. Religion is a collection of beliefs that people have decided to be true for them.
Depending on their beliefs about immigrants, different people experience the same foreign person in a different way, as beliefs determine our experience of life. Some of the most common beliefs about immigrants are that they are “in need of education or help” or a “threat to local safety”, they are “a cheap and convenient workforce for jobs that nobody else wants to do” or “lazy parasites for the social security system” and of course “exotic mates for relationships”.
Immigrants in return have their own set of beliefs about Finns. But all people are convinced that their experience of a person is the truth as we tend to forget that we see the world through our beliefs and not reality as it is. Building a multicultural society is therefore challenging. First we will have to make a shift from our beliefs being “the truth for everybody” to being only “one truth of man”. Then we will be forced to see that any belief is only a specific way of looking at the world.

A multicultural society could actually be a lot of fun if we only considered every belief as “another interesting point of view” on life. We could even start to play with it. Hey, that is what you believe? Interesting. I wonder how life feels with such a belief?
But playing doesn’t seem to be a favorite activity, neither in Finland nor in the countries immigrants come from. May be we would have a chance in Finland if we made it a competition? Like: Let’s find out which beliefs create the best life experience and then we put those together and tie a nice multicultural package. Instead of trying to merge a given set of historically incompatible beliefs into a patch work society, we could take “freedom of belief” to the next level and start to create new beliefs that suit our circumstances and allow all of us to have a pleasant life experience. After all, it says in the bible: as you believe, thy shall be done onto you. If we bother to have beliefs about life at all, a multicultural context could be a path to “real freedom of belief” where we throw out beliefs that do not serve us any longer and choose new beliefs that allow us to create the life experience we want. It might take a little sisu though.

The North Karelia Association for Social Welfare presented the award for civic activities to Alain Minguet. The award is granted on application by the Finnish Federation for Social Welfare and Health and this year its criteria are brave and visionary activism to create a dialogue between different groups of people.
The board of North Karelia Association for Social Welfare would like to highlight the following reasons for the award:
Alain Minguet is good at wondering what is Finland, what it is to be Finnish or North Karelian and how people resemble each other and how they differ from each other. He boldly and critically brings to light problems he has discovered and suggests improvements.
Alain Minguet has moved here from Belgium and is an excellent example of the fact that someone who has come from elsewhere can be of great help to the whole community. In the European Year of Volunteering Alain Minguet is perfect example of an active, cooperative and efficient civic activist. Alain hears the voices of different people and he is easy to approach.
The award is a miniature sculpture by sculptor Erkka Aurenmaa. The award was presented by Pirjo Myyry, the chairperson of the North Karelia Association for Social Welfare.

KANSALAISTOIMINNAN TUNNUSTUSPALKINTO LUOVUTETTIIN KANSALAISTALON 15-vuotisjuhlassa perjantaina 2.12 klo 12.15.

Pohjois-Karjalan Sosiaaliturvayhdistys luovutti kansalaistoiminnan tunnustuspalkinnon Alain Minguetille. Palkinnon myöntää hakemuksesta Sosiaali- ja terveysturvan keskusliitto ja sen perusteena on tänä vuonna rohkea ja näkemyksellinen toiminta vuoropuhelun rakentamisessa eri ihmisryhmien välille.
Palkinnon perusteluissa Pohjois-Karjalan Sosiaaliturvayhdistyksen hallitus painottaa seuraavia asioita:
Alain Minguet ihmettelee hyvällä tavalla Suomea, suomalaisuutta, pohjoiskarjalaisuutta, ihmisten välisiä eroja ja yhtäläisyyksiä. Hän nostaa rohkeasti esille havaitsemiaan epäkohtia, on kriittinen ja tekee parannusehdotuksia.
Alain Minguet on muuttanut tänne Belgiasta ja on hyvä esimerkki siitä, miten muualta tullut voi olla voimavara koko yhteisölle. EU:n vapaaehtoistoiminnan teemavuonna Alain Minguet on hyvä esimerkki aktiivisesta, yhteistyökykyisestä ja aikaan saavasta vapaaehtoistoimijasta. Alain on herkkä kuulemaan ihmisten ääntä ja häntä on helppo lähestyä.
Palkinto on kuvanveistäjä Erkka Auermaan suunnittelema pienoispatsas. Tunnustuspalkinnon luovutti Pohjois-Karjalan Sosiaaliturvayhdistyksen puheenjohtaja Pirjo Myyry.

A New Beginning in a New Country

I came to Finland from Tanzania with my parents in 2007. I am now 13 years old so back then I was only a 9-year-old boy. My father was already studying in Finland and I remember how me and my brother were told that now our mother had been accepted as a student in far away Joensuu. Moving to Finland sounded like a good idea because I had already been missing my father for a year and traveling to the other side of the world sounded really exciting. A few weeks later my mother told me that our school affairs had also been settled: my brother would start in the seventh grade at Pataluodon koulu and I would be studying in the third grade at Rantakylän koulu. She was determined about the fact that we were to do our studies in Finnish which was quite a shock to me.

My parents accompanied me on my first day in the new school and we went to meet my new teacher. She told me that I would not be the only one in a new situation because there were other foreign students in the school as well. I should not also worry too much about my Finnish because everything would be just fine in a few months. I did soon notice that even though I couldn’t say a word at first, all the teachers were very friendly and encouraging about speaking Finnish. If I did some kind of a mistake, they helped and urged me to try again. All this despite of the fact that at the beginning I only understood if they were happy and said ”hyvä, hyvä!” My class teacher also helped me with other things besides the language. She told me to get acquainted with things like Finnish food and new kind of sports. That might be the reason for me getting used to Finland much quicker than my parents did.

On my first day I also almost right away met a Russian boy who was called Vova. Although we did not share a language, we quickly became friends. I only knew my mother tongue swahili and English, Vova could only speak Russian and a bit of Finnish. After we had tried all the languages we could we ended up using all kinds of signs and gestures. Of course, we wanted to learn Finnish fast because that was the best alternative for a common language. There was also another thing which made learning a new language and finding new friends easier: winter sports such as cross-country skiing and ice hockey. I did a lot of sports after school as well because it was easy to get to know people while playing, for example, football.

Immigrants who have come to Finland often complain that they miss the food or the climate of their home country, or their old friends. However, in my opinion the most important thing is going out instead of staying at home and waiting for someone to drag you somewhere. If you start a hobby, you can then meet people and learn the language. There’s also another tip I would like to give to the foreigners in Finland: you should learn to view the nature in the same way as the Finns do. In the forest, for example, you can go hiking or pick berries or mushrooms. I know that language is also an important thing but my life in Finland has been easy especially thanks to doing things outdoors.

Discussion – Racist Finland?

Introduction by researcher Vesa Puuronen

Discussion is based on the new book by Vesa Puuronen, which is an analysis of the forms of racism in Finland and an overview of the different approaches in the study of racism. The book also outlines the possibilities of a non-racist and multicultural society. Its starting points are the different meanings of the term ”multiculturality” and experiences in building multicultural societies in Finland and elsewhere.

The discussion is in Finnish and it is interpreted into English.
